Huel is a nice, innovative idea that's a bit different from many of the "diet shakes" or food supplements out there. There is an emphasis on giving your body the balanced nutrition it needs, which I like. If you find it hard to do meal prep in advance or find healthy alternatives when you're out and about, then I'd recommend giving it a try.
When you write a fitness and nutrition blog you become no stranger to new supplements – every couple of weeks I seem to get a message in my inbox about a new protein shake. It’s a saturated market for sure. So when Huel popped up I was actually kind of intrigued. Claiming to be a “nutritionally complete powdered food”, the idea is that this can provide a balanced combination of the protein, carbs and fats that you need, all in a zero-hassle shake. Time to re-Huel
The product comes in an air-tight resealable bag and you can mix it alone with water in the shaker, or combine it with other ingredients to create your own combo. At the moment it comes in two varieties – unflavoured and vanilla. So far, so conventional. But the team at Huel have clearly spent a huge amount of time researching and developing the product, working with experienced nutritionists and dieticians so that you can get over 100% of the EU’s recommended daily nutrition amounts from 2000 calories of Huel over the course of a day. Which is potentially great for anyone who finds it hard to find healthy food on the go, or hitting your daily macros consistently.
What’s it Made From?
Unlike most of the simple protein shakes on the market, Huel does not use the ever-popular Whey Protein (which is a dairy-derived product that is essentially a by-product of cheese production). Instead, they use Pea Protein to create a product that is 100% vegan. Alongside this, Huel also contains a blend of Oats, Brown Rice Protein, Flaxseed and various other ingredients to deliver a balanced combination of macro-nutrients that is also low GI and contains no added sugar. Save the Planet Man!
A lot has been made by Huel about their environmental credentials and alongside the emphasis on convenience, it seems that one of the main motivations for creating the product was finding a way to address not only the huge amount of food wastage that occurs in our homes, but also the challenges of sustainably producing enough food for the world – which I guess is where the 100% vegan angle also comes in.

The not-so good
- To use Huel for your entire daily food consumption would take almost 13 scoops, which is quite a lot of shakes!
- Not everyone will be a fan of the taste and the range of flavours is limited at the moment
- I’ve always been an advocate of eating “proper food” rather than over-supplementing, and fundamentally I wouldn’t want to use food in a powdered form as my only nutrition source
